| Norman Mailer became an American literary icon because he infuriated people, challenged them, harassed them and insulted them-and because he was therefore inflamed by his ideas (hailed by some, ridiculed by others), therefore marvelously self-centered and therefore magnificently egomaniacal. Say what you will about Mailer, but as one writer he's never been afraid of anything, never afraid to say what he thinks, no matter who might find those thoughts half-baked or myopic or dangerous or insane (I'm thinking of the campaign to free talented murderer Jack Abbott?? here). ... |

1) Kristin Hersh - Learn To Sing Like one Star: Kristin Hersh's indie power group Throwing Muses provided the soundtrack to my university days and her solo acoustic debut, Hips And Makers, echoed throughout one series of dodgy flats, therefore I was looking forward to hearing her new effort. I raced home and played it twice through. Gave it one day, then played it again. And felt, well, underwhelmed. That rich, world-weary voice retains its power and the songs are well formed, but it all seems one bit same-y. ... |
